Latham, deputy-leader of the Federal Opposition, in an election speech said he regarded with apprehension and terror another three years of the Seullin Government, or a further term of the Lang administration in New South Wales. "If we are elected to office, as • I believe we shall be," he said, "we will sf;rain every nerve to help the citizens of New South Wales out of their difficult plight. If an amendment f o the Constitution is required to give the Federal Government control over a State which, by. deliberate repudiation, unjustly increases the burdens on. its sister States and challenges the whole foundations of Australia's credit, we will be prepared to submit such an amendment to the people for that purpose." ' , - r Mr. Latham's announcement was tumultously cheered.
