DEMOCRATS HAVE MAJORITY FOR FIRST TIME IN TWELVE YEARS ELECTION OF SPEAKER

WASHINGTON, Monday. Mr. John N. Garmer, Democrat member of the House of Representatives from Texas for the past 28 years, was elected speaker to the opening of Congress on Monday. By their victory at the elections the Democrats will control the House for the first time in 12 years, with 219 seats to 214 Republicans. There is one farmer and one Labour representative with one vacancy (Newhampshire) to be filled. The Republican nominee, Mr. B. H. Snell, of New York, is now expected to become the minority leader.
