DUST NUISANCE.
M.
CAVE.
To the Editor. Sir, — Despite the fact that much of your space is taken up with election correspondence, I should be pleased if you would allow be to bring before your notice as briefly as possible a f ew facts bearing upon a recent local eontroversy. I refer to the Beautification schemes. Does it not seem strange that, while the Borough Council has been busily spending both time and money • on the planting of trees about the streets, a commendable action in itself, many things worthy of primary consideration have been left undone ? For iaastance, one of the main streets of our town, Arawa Street, on a windy day, presents a spectacle which can hy no means serve as an advertisement for the beautification of Rotorua. There being only a narrow strip of bitumen along the centre of the road, clouds of dust are blown in all directions, causing a great deal of annoyance to pedestrians and in particular, to the shopkeepers tbemselves. Any customer entering a, dusty shop and being served at a dusty counter is immediately discouraged from purchasing. A more serious position occurs, however, when we are forced to mark down and 'sell as "soiled" much of our stock, partially ruined through this dust nuisance. Furthermore, we are prevented from displaying to the fullest advantage our stock in hand. Perhaps if the Borough Council could secure the services of a water cart, providing Rotorua is fortunate enough to possess one, a great deal of what is really unnecessary trouble might be saved in more directions than one. I make this suggestion, however, as being only a temporary measure, and hope that before very long the council will tak-e steps towards having the remainder of the road bitumenised. — I am. ete.,
