LOCAL AND GENERAL

Radio Interf erence In view of the fact that the earliest election returns will be received over the radio, it is hoped that users of apparatus which interf eres with reception will as far as possible abstain from using their instruments from 7 p.m. onwards to-night. Apparatus likely to cause interf erence includes flashing advertising signs, domestic vacunm cleaners, high-frequency machines, violet ray and other electrically operated toilet apparatus, electric drills and similar ipachines, and last but not least, oscillating wireless sets ! » j "Morning Post" Telephone The "Morning Post'' telephone service will be heavily loaded to-night, and local subscribers and residents of Rotorua are therefore asked to refrain from seeking information regarding the progress of the elections by telephone. Every effort will, however, be made to supply such information as is available to residents of the outlying distriets, who are unable to obtain news from other sources. Dancing in Streets The Rotorua Retail Traders' Associ iation has requested its representative" on the Borough Amusement committee, Mr. E. Pratt, to try and have the dancing deleted from the Christmas Eve carnival programme, Members considered that as tha,t was purely a shopping night, no good purpose could be served by having dancing in the streets. Modern Electioneering * Modern electioneering methods were introduced in the Rotorua electorate yesterday, when the local committee of the Labour party chartered a Rotorua Airways 'plane and distributed 6000 election pamphlets in all towns and townships in the constituency. Summer Flowers Early The planting of the summer borders in the Government Gardens is now completed and the flower beds are already showing signs of improvement in some cases being particularly forward, as a result of the warm weather conditions that have prevailed during the past few weeks. Blue Bath Pool Nearly Completed The smaller pool in the new Blue Baths building will be open for the use of the public about a week before Christmas. The plasterers who have been busily engaged for the past few weeks will complete their work by j Saturday and after that the Public Works Department's regular staff will not take long to complete the finishing touches. The Tourisf De- , partment's plumbers are at present working on the water and drainage connections and shortly the electrical staff will install the lighting. Winter Cup After donating the Winter Cup for competition among district clubs, the Rotorua Bowling Club, over the weekend, regained the trophy after its brief stay away from home. A Rotorua rink, Merriman, Watson, Williams, Richards (skip), visited Okoroire and defeated the holders, Tirau, 22 — 15. Rotorua will defend the. trophy against Te Poi during the coming week-end. Posts Not Ghosts Possibly reflections unon bank robbers and other desperate individuals i whose deeds have lately been filling i the newspapers, flitted across the ! mind of a Rotorua resident at a late j hour on Monday evening when he oh- ) served a man in front of him, on the j dark side of an unformed street, hastily conceal himself alongside a telegraph post. The late-bound pedestrian passed the man, but kept a watcliful eye on him as he proceeded. As soon as he turned round again, however, the man promptly effaced himself in the same manner as before. Finally, after watching the man from the shadow of his verandah for some time, the resident decided to investigate and ascertain the reason underlying this strange affection for lampposts. The matter was easily explained when he examined the posts. On each one, was an election "dodger." Retail Traders' Association The committee of the Rotorua Retail Traders' Association met on Monday night in the Dolly Varden Tea Rooms, when there were present, Messrs. W. R. Harris (chairman), Garriock, Mathias, E. T. Harris, W. Spear, Musgrave, Pratt and the secretary. Apologies were received from Messrs. Higgins and Stonehouse. The following new members were elected. Messrs. S. C. Brooker, W. P. Snell, E. R. Baxter, T. Kelly, G. Johnston and W. Bennett." " A motion was passed complimenting the Borough Amusement Committee on their proposed Christmas and New Year programme, but suggesting a certain small amendment.
