YOUTH ADMITS HAVING RUN AWAY FROM HIS EMPLOYMENT PROBATION ON THEFT CHARGE

-By Telegraph. — Copyrlght).

HAMILTON, Mon. A frank admission that he did not like work was made by Alfred Chedderton, aged 17 years, in the Magistrate's Court this morning. The youth pleaded guilty to stealing several tablets of chocolate of a total value of 10s, the property- of Joe Leng. Senior-Sergeant Sweeney said up to October 31 accused was employed at the post office at Kingsland, Auckland. He left there without the knowledge of his parents and said he was tired of work. Arriving at Hamilton, he had practically no money and stole the chocolate to provide himself with food. He had not been in trouble before. Accused's father was an inmate of a hospital and his stepmother declined to assist him and said the youth had got out of her control. "I don't want to go hungry," said the accused when asked by the Magistrate if he had anything to say. , The Senior-Sergeant explained that ' Mr. F. Findlay was prepared to look j after the accused and find him work. Accused had said the reason he left the post office was because he dtdn't like work. His Worship: Is that so? — Yes, sir. *■ His Worship: What occupation did you have? — I was a message boy. His Worship, speaking to the ac- l*1 cused, said he hoped the arrest and |j charges of theft would be a warning g to accused that he was too young to §g be able to ^>ick and choose what i work he should do. He would give j§ him another chance. g Accused was admitted to probation 1 for 12 months. | — — £ Chedderton was taken to the Ham- 5 Ition Police Court on Friday by & the Chinaman Joel Leng, who charged |j him with the theft of which he has | now been convicted. =
