PUMPING STATION
PECULIAR DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED AT KING ST. DRAINAGE ENGINEER'S REPORT The borough drainage engineer, Mr. F. J. Lenihan, submitted the following report regarding progress on the borough sewerage pumping station to Thursday night's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Couneil. All ma;n and interior wralls have been completed on the pumping station, and it is expected that all construction work on this section will be completed by the end of this week. All difficulties here have now been completely overcome. The contractors have made a start on the 250 feet of feeder main connecting the low level main with the pumping station. Th:s is expected to be a fairly difficult piece of work. To complete the scheme, there still remains the laying of 400 feet of steel rising main connecting the pumping station with the high level mains. On completion of the pumping station, a start will be made immediately on the erection of a control house. It has been decided to eonstruct this with pre-cast concrete blocks. Local firms have been invited to submit prices for the supply of these blocks, it being the intention to have the build'ng erected by Couneil workmen. l wish to report that all difficulties in connection. with the construction of the pumping station have been suceessfully overcome and the structure itself is now in the final stages cf completion. The station is now perfectly sound in every respeet and no apprehens'on need be felt for its future safety. With the use of £12,000 worth of mains hinging on the stability .of the pumping station, it was realised that every possible eventuality would have to be provided for and 's.pch provision has been made. Altheugh the period of construction has been a lengthy one — ten months — t will not doubt be conceded by all those who are acquainted with the history of the undertaking that the peculiar difficulties encountered were not of a nature that could be overcome by rush tactics. As soon as •the contractors are clear, a start will be made on the erection of the con-tral-house and the installation of the pumping plant.
