LOCAL AND GENERAL

Huge Octopus Caught What is believed to be the largest octopus ever caught in New Zealand waters was brought to Rotorua., by Mr. Kunac, on Sunday, One of Mr. Kunac's eniployees, Mr. Charles Reid, was fishing about six mil'es off Maketu and had hooked a hapuka which, as is usual with these fish, sounded. When Mr. Reid, pulled up the line he found the octopus clinging to the hapuka, so it was brought into the boat and killed with a knife. The octopus can he seen at Mr. Kunac's shop from two to six p.m. each day. It measures approximately 14 feet from tip to tip of its i.tentacles, and its weight is approximately 100 Ibs. The suckers on the main tentacle are over three ihches across at the body end and they number nearly 250. Fire at Laundry The fire brigade was celled by phone at 6.40 last evening to a fire at the Rotorua Electric Laundry, in Haupapa Street. The ceiling and a wall in the boiler room were ablaze, but the brigade had no difficulty in getting the fire under control before any serious damage was done, It is believed that the outbreak was eaused by spontaneous combnstion. Good River Fishing Fish in the upper reaehes of the Waikato River are reported to he numerous and in exceptionally fine condition. A party during the weekend caught nineteen on the fly, averaging four and a-half pounds. One

well-known sportsman, using a spoon, had the misfortune, when landing what appeared to he a particularly large fish, to break the tip of his rod. The fish, which several times came to the surface, was apparently in the vicinity of nine pounds. River fishing this season offers very favourable prospects, the catch to date indicating a ready response to the dry fiy in preference to the less scientific spoon. Lahour Leader's Visit.
