LOCAL RELIEF
ARRAN GEMENTS FOR STREET COLLECTION TO RAISE FUNDS PICTURE SHOW NEXT SUNDAY A preliminary meeting of delegates from the Rotorua Women's Club, the St. Luke's Girls' Club, members of the Nurses Association, the Catholic Women's Association, and the Rotorua Boy Scouts was held at the borough council chambers last night in connection with the street collection tb be made on Saturday November 28 for the purposes of the Rotorua local unemployment committee. Father Spierings occupied the chair. Father Spierings explained the reasons for the proposed collection and outlined the work which had been done in giving local relief since July last and in finding work for married and single men in the town. The finances with which they had been working, he said, had been eolleeted by means of socials, a concert and personal appeals to associations in the town. By thjs means £197 had been eolleeted. In addition, the Women's .Club had spent most of their funds in this work so that to-day the position was that the general fund was exhausted and the finances of the Women's Club were at a loW ebb. /'The work carried but," said F4ther Spierings, "has relieved praetiI cally all the distress in Rotorua and | has beeii done so quietly that very
few people know what a large amount of work has been necessary in giving relief. So much so, that the usual criticism of the committee's work is that there is no relief necessary in Rotorua. It is, however, a fact that should the committee stop this work to-day, some 35 to 40 families and some 30 single men wonld be without the means of suhsistence. Hence the necessity for an immediate appeal to the charity of the people of Rotorua." The meeting then discussed details in connection with the various means available for the raising of the necessary money. These include the proceeds of a picture show to he given in the Majesti'c Theatre oh Suriday, November 22 through the generosity of the management. A house to house canvas is also to be made, but the chief efforts of the committee will he the street collection on Saturday, Novethber 28. Father Spierings ihtroduced Mr. C. B. Peterson who has undertaken the duties of brgattiSer of the drive for money. I It was decided to concentrate during the present week on an effort to fill the Majestic Theatre next Sunday night and 'to rouse the enthusiasm of every charity worker in the town to help to make the street collection the [ biggest in the history of Rotorua. A further meeting /will be heid i next Monday night to finalise arI rangements for the collection and the hope was expressed that all organisations in Rotorua., not already represented will send delegates to this meeting. r«afiiaiSfifiSH
