Plus fours — of very modest dimensions — are believed to have appeared about 1912, but no one knows where | they came from. There is a sort of ! legend in the trade that a good player I whose handicap was plus four appeared at a suburban golf club — Arkley, it is thought — in rather full knickerboekers. A wag called out, "Oh, he's come in his plus four suit." No one knows who this brave pioneer was, but apparently people kept saying, "Here's the plus four man" behind his back until the term was gradually evolved. But none of the members of Arkley Golf Club claim the honour of being or have even heard of, the first plus four man. Extensive Shag, Rookery. The discovery of an extensive shag rookery has been made on the shore of Lake Waikare, in the lower Waikato, the nests being high on the branches of a big elump of kahikatea trees, in many instances at least 60ft above the ground. The rookery is some distance back from the lake, where there is a jungle of under- | growth, many small lagoons and much swamp. It has been ascertained that I at least three varieties of shag haunt the rookery, the large black shag which the Maoris call "kawau," the short-billed shag, and the little hlack Shag. The different species live together On the friendliest terms, and hunt the waters of the lake together. Rare Fish. A most untisual visitor to New Zealand waters was captured by a Mercury Bay fisherman recently, in the shape of a ling. These fish frequent the Newfoundland and Dogger Bank waters, and are very seldom seerl south of the Line. On only one other occasion has the oldest fisherman of the Bay seen such a eatch. The ling is very highly esteemed in Britain and is the basis of the Portuguese bacahalao. 9 j A new selection of books from Nelson's Edinburgh Library has just arrived.
