NEW PROPOSAL CHALLENGED ,BY LABOUR PARTY ATTACK ON LIVING STANDARD
WELLINGTON, last night. Strong objection to the proposal in the Finance Bill (No. 4) that local authorities may, with the concurr.ence of the Unemployment; Board .carry out.any work in refief pf unemployment was voiced .in the House of Repr-esentatives to-night. Members of the Lahour Party charactprised the proposal as an onslaught. on the standard of living- of the- people: and challenged the proposal. The claqse was fetained hy 35 votes to 12 votes, Messrs Atmore and Blapk vpting with the minority. The Bill was under desultory discussion for seyeral hoqrs.and progress .was reported shortly bef ore midpight aftey about half the clauses had .been approyed in .committee. .
