MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT WHEN FINING PERSISTENT BOQKMAKER THREE MONTHS NEXT TIME

AUCKLAND, Monday. ! William Alf-red -Mackay (39) a| bookmaker, was fined £100 to-day for 1 keeping a common gaming house. j It was his fifth, offence under the j Gaming Act and his previous fines i included .two of £100. The Magistrate,- Mr. Hunt, said:j "Some of these offenders seem to re- j gard £100 fines in the light of lic- ■ ense fees." | Accused's counsel assured the mag- ; istrate that fines were ,as hard for ! bqqkmakers as for .other people, and £10,0 - for a, license was by no means cbeap. •- The magistrate in imposing the fine ; said "It is his last chancej.it will be three- mqnths- in gaol next time."
