STARTING HANDLE
SOME OF ITS USES. With the present high standard of electric starting apparatus most motorists are apt to forget that such an appliance as the starting handle was supplied with the car. It is a good plan to get the handle into place occasionally to test the compression of the cylinders. This should be done when the engine is hot, with the throttle open and the ignition off. If valves and rings are in good condition a eylinder should hold its compression for some time agaiftst the handle, the piston spring.ing back again when the handle is released. If the breather is left open leakage past the rings will be heard if it exists. It might be said that the compression of an engine is no better than that of its worst eylinder. It should be uniform in all, and if it is not it pays to have the valves ground immediately. Not only are leaky valves wasteful of fuel, but they will soon burn to an extent making necessary their renewal. Another use for the handle is to get the car out of a slippery place where the wheels cannot get enough grip for the engine to move it. With low gear engaged it is easy to move the car by turning the handle, and the smoothness with which hand nower can be applied will not start the wheel slipping. The ignition must, of course, be turned off.
