CREW'S ATTORNEY SAYS COAST GUARD INQUIRY IS "WHITEWASHING" CIVIL ACTIONS THREATENED
-By Telegraph — Copyright.)
Rec. Nov. 5, 5.5 p.mNEW YORK, Wednes. A Boston message states that War-rant-Boatswain Jesper, testifying before a Coast Guard hearing, denied charges that his patrol boats deliberately sank the rum-runner Sophie E, as alleged by the British skipper, Captain Bellman. The attorney, Mr. Matthew McGrath, retained by the British Consulate for the Sophie E's crew, asked that he be allowed a transcript of all the testimony at the hearing. When this was refused he asserted that the hearing would be a "whitewashing." He said he would not permit any of the crew to testify. He also would appeal to the British Embassy at Washington and would file suits for damages against Jesper in the civil courts.
