RELIEF WORK

SINGLE MEN NEGLECT TO REGISTER PREPARING FOR NEXT YEAR At a meeting of the executive of the Rotorua Unemployment Comnrttee held last night, it was reported that a considerable number of single men had failed to report last week for work under the N,o. 5 Scheme. It was decided that any single man who did not report for work should be stood down until they re-register as unemployed, unless they can give some satisfactory explanation for their non-attendance. Advice was received from the Unemployment Comimissioner that before the board eould consider the question of the establishment of a temporary single men's camp, it required further information. He stated that if a camp was established as was suggested, the'amjount paid to the men would be a charge against the allocation available under No. 5 Scheme to this district. After the matter had been fully discussed it was decided that all single men he given the' option of receiving aceommodation and meals at the Isolation Hospital in return for two days work each week on some development work. The matter is to he reviewed at the next meeting. The Minister of Lands wrote advising that he was having inquiries made with reference to the applieation of the committee for the use of portion of th'e Ngakuru block for the purpose of growing potatoes to assist the relief committee in next year's work. The opinion was expressed that if any erop was to be planted it should be put in very soon and after the question had been discussed from all angles, it ' was decided 'that, provided suitable arrapgements can he made to raise the money necessary to purchase seed and manure, an area of approximately 10 acres should be planted in potatoes, the amount of money ra'-sed to he refunded from the sale of the potatoes, and the balance of the crop to he. made available to the relief committee for ^relief work next year.
