MELBOURNE CUP PHAR LAP WELL BEATEN AND FINISHES SECOND LAST CONCENTRATE BREAKS DOWN

MELBOURNE, Tuesday. The Melbourne Cup resulted: — White Nose, 6.12 — Percival 1 Shadow King, 8.7 — W. Scanlon 2 Concentrate, 8.10 — A. Reed 3 Fotirteen started. White Nose led early from Alcaman, Carry On, Shadow King, Phar Lap and Cimbrian, with Concentrate fourth last. At the mile, Alcman immediately headed White Nose but the latter led at the turn from Alcman, Concentrate, Second Wind, Phar Lap, and Carry On. Shadow King and Concentrate finished gamely, but White Nose held the lead and won by two lengths. Half a neck separated second and third. Then came Carry On, Veilmond, Prince Dayton, Koomeela and Phar Lap, with Sartaress last. The time was 3.26. The Racing White Nose led most of the way in the Cup and won brilliantlly. Shadow King and Concentrate finished gamely. The . latter appeared lame at the finish. Phar Lap had every chance but failed in the straight, The winner is owned and trained in Adelaide. He finished second to Carry On in the last Australian Cup. His rider, Percival, who has been hitherto unlucky in big races had a popular reception. It is stated after the race he had had a great run and was always confident. 5ike said Phar Lap had every chance but could not go when the pace was clapped on. Ashley Reed said that Concentrate was a certainty. He was beaten because he broke down when the race was won, a furlong from home.
