ELECTION DATE
("Post" Special Commissioner)
PROBABLY DEC. 2 JEADERS OF COALITION PLAN TOUR THROUGH DOUBTFUL ELECTORATES SESSION'S PROGRAMME
WELLINGTON, Saturday. Some doubt now appears to exist is to whether it will be possible to :onclude the business of the session >y the end of next week. The Prime (linister, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, stat:d, after a Cabinet meeting to-day, hat no definite date had yet been :elected by Cabinet for the election md said that all depended on the date in which the session closed. Mr. Forbes said that there was itill a considerable amount of imporant business to be transacted. The 3ublic Works statement and estimates yould probably be presented to the flouse on Monday night, and the Cus;oms Bill would also be introduced, ilthough it would not be proceeded yith until later in the week. It was loped to give consideration to the Broadcasting Bill on Monday night is that measure was ready. In addition the House had to deal with the Mortgagors Relief Amendment Bill, the Finance Bill, (one of the provisions of which referred to superannuation payments to Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways. The Chattels Transfer Amendment Bill, the Apppropriation Bill, and the Supplementary Estimates. Mr. Forbes agreed that it might yet be' possible to finish up by next Saturday, but he was rather inclined to the opinion that the Session would run on until Wednesday week. It would then be possible to fix the date of the general election. • , Mr. Forbes said he was not yet in i position to make any announcement regarding the selection of candidates :or seats other than those already held oy Government supporters, but the matter was being carefully considjred.. It is expected that the Prime Minister will participate in a national lampaign on behelf of the Coalition Sovernment and he may have the supoort of the leader of the Refonn Party, the Hon. J. G. Coates, who, it s surmised, will be able to devote lis attention to other parts of the Doliinion apart from his own electorate. The Coalition leaders will probaby concentrate on electorates where ;here is danger of an anti- Labour ro te being split. Although an official innouncement will be with-held for lorne days, it is learned on good authirity that Cabinet has selected Wedlesday, December 2 as the date for he general election.
