T. HILL OF ROTORUA WINS CHAMPIONSHIP 3 AND 1 CLOSE OF SEASON V The final of the first Taupo open amateur championship was played on Labour Day between T. Iiill (Rotorua) and G. W. Thorpe (Taupo), Hill winning 3 and 1 after a close match. Both his good balls at the first, Hill be'ng on the green_ while Thorpe was to the right. Hill la'id his seeond dead and won 3 and 4. Hill one up- Both hit beautiful shots at the second, Hill being about 30 yards ahead. Thorpe's second was over the green, Hill finding the green and winning 4 to 5. Hill 2 upHill Two Up Hill drove out of bounds at the third, Thorpe finding the centre of the fairway and this order was maintained to the green Thorpe winning 5 and 6. Both hit good drives at the 4th and halved in fives. The fifth was halved in 4 and Hill won the sixth in 4 to 6 to be two up. The seventh was halved in fours, Hill missed his drive at the eighth, Thorpe winning 4 to 6 to reduee the j lead to one, the ninth being halved in 4. Hill's card for the first half read: 3, 4, 6, 5, 4, 4, 4, 6, 4. Total 40. Thorpe being 4, 5, 5, 5, 4, 6, 4, 4, 4. Total 41.
The tenth was won by Hill in 4 to 5, but Thorpe toolc the eleventh in 4 to 5 to be one down again. The twelfth was halved in 5. Hill won the 13th in 5 — 6 and lost the 14th, 4 to 5The 15th was halved in 4 and Hill took the next in 3 to 4 to be dormy 2 and making no mistake on the 17th, won, 3 to 5, taking the match 3 and 1 The winner's card inward, read: 4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 3. — 34. This may be regarded as quite good golf and Hill is to be congratulated on his win-
Other Results The bogey match on Sunday resulted in a win for G. W. Thorpe *1 down. The medal round was won by W. Ricket 90—19—71. The Canadian foursomes on Monday morrj.ing refulted in a tie between W. Rielrit and A. A. Noble and T. Hill and G. Morley (Napier) 65 nett. Rickit called heads and won, both pairs deciding on this method. A dainty afternoon tea and luncheon was supplied at the Tea Kiosk on the links and Mrs Peart is to be congratulated upon the excellence of the catering. A dance followed at night when the presentation of trophies took place and proved a huge success. The holder of the Laidlaw cup for ladies is Mrs Barron who has suceessfully defended it on the last f our occasions. The men's cup is held by A. A. Noble who defeated G. WThorpe.
