Wintry Conditions. The warra, sunny weather of the past week or two commenced to change on Friday night, and wintry conditions prevailed on Saturday and Sunday. The cold snap culminated yesterday in snowfalls on the higher hills in the district. Yesterday snow was visible on Mt. Tarawera and reports frqm Taupo indicated heavy falls on the Kaimanawas and the mountains in National Park. With a southerly wind blowing, conditions were unpleasant in Rotorua, but at an early hour this morning, the weather was cairn and the sky clear, giving promise of a fine day for the holiday. Speedway Opening At the Rotorua Speedway on the Te Ngae Road, to-day, at 1 p.m., immediately after His Worship the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, has declared the track open, Alf Mattson, the New Zealand dirt track champion, will make the double circuit of the course on his machine, thus completing the offieial opening ceremony. Mr. Jack Kay, manager of Western Springs, and other Auckland officials will assist with the management and a frequent bus service has been arranged. Retailers' Donation to Relief Fund At a special meeting of the Rotorua Retail Traders' Association, held at the Dolly Varden Tea Rooms, on Friday, it was resolved to donate the whole of the fund known as the Shopping Carnival Reserve Fund to the Rotorua central relief committee. Hinemoa's Bath. Hinemoa's Bath on Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua, which for a number of years had been unsafe on account of a heavy growth of water weed, was, about a month ago cleared by the Maoris living on the island in an effort to make it fit for use again. Since then, however, the bath has been allowed to become filled with the weed again and is now almost as uninviting as before it was cleared. At present the temperature of the | bath is noticeably higher than it was | a few years ago. ' Angler's Evening. In the cairn of yesterday's sunset, fish were rising all along the shore reaches of Lakes Rotoma, Rotoehu and Rotoiti. It was an ideal angler's evening and in a week's time, would have been appreciated as such. Wild Horses. Wild horses are still a danger to motorists, both on the Taupo Road and on the roads in the vieinity of Rotoiti and Rotorua. They have, however a facility for keeping out of harms way, which does not always extend to the domestic animals which stray on the highways. Chimney Fire. A call was received at the Rotorua fire station at three o'clock yesterday afternoon to a chimney fire at the house of Major J. H. Herrald, in Tutanekai Street. No damage was done. Colds Affect Attendance. The headmaster, Mr. B. M. Green, reported at the Primary School comi mittee meeting on Friday evening, that the attendance of pupils at the school had been affected since the last meeting through sickness, especially colds. The chairman said that precautions had been taken during the mild influenza epidemic, of the last few weeks, the school having been disinfected and fumigated. Golf Club's Dance The Rotorua Golf Club held their last dance of the season at the Club House on Saturday evening. The tearoom and verandah were cleared for dancing and the ladies' and the men's lounges were arranged for sitting-out. There was a good attendance of club members and visitors, the inside floor being filled to capacity. During the evening an enjoyable supper was served in the tea room after which dancing continued until midnight. An air of gaiety prevailed throughout the evening and it was with reluctance that the dancers departed for their j homes. , I School Dental Clinic. The Rotorua Primary School Com- i mittee met on Friday evening at the school to deal with g'eneral busi- i ness and discuss the proposed new j dental clinic. Mr C. A. Clax-k was in 1 the chair and , others present were, Messrs. W. J. Kurney, L. Ewert,' P. : L. Scott, H. Wilkinson, N. B. Hunt, 1 A. T. Butt (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. B. M. Green. It was decided that the secretary gather information regarding dental qlinics and circularise all interested bodies inviting them to attend a special meeting to be held on Friday, October 30, for the purpose of forming a dental clinic committee. To Help School Funds. At a previous meeting of the Rotorua primary school committee various means were discussed for raising funds for work at the school. At the meeting of the committee on Friday evening the secretary reported that he had approached Mr. A. Macdermott asking his assistance and*had received the generous offer of half the takings of the Majestic pictures on October 29, when Zane Grey's "The Border Legion" will be shown, He had accepted the offer and the school children are to assist by selling tickets. All of this merchandise was bought on a falling market, assuring the keenest of prices .
