MR. SCULLIN RE-AFFIRMS HIS GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE OPPOSITION SUPPORT PROMISED

Rec. Oct. 23, 8.5 p.m. CANBERRA, Friday. The Prime Minister, Mr J. H. Seullin, further questioned in the House of Representatives regarding the Government's intentions in conneetion with the shipping strike, replied: "I will support law and order, but will not run amok, and will not be provocative. Our powers are limited and can only he used at the request of, and in co-operation with, the city authorities." Mr. J. G. Latham, deputy leader of the Oposition, promised thes suport of the OppoSition to settle the dispute. He questioned the wisdom of the New Guard's intervention. Mr. Scullin said there jvas a very ugly feeling amongst the seamen, due largely to the attitude of the New Guard. Mr. Latham said the matter would be left to the Government. If it was unable or unwilling to protect citizens, then a new problem would arise.
