MINISTER WRITES TO USERS IN INTERESTS OF LOCAL INDUSTRY
WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Hon. D. Jones, Minister of Mines, has wxitten to the principal users of imported coal seeking their assistance in an effort to promote a greater use of New Zealand coal in order to reduce uhemployment and idle time in the mines of the Dominion. The Minister states that last month importations amounted to 12,426 tons, of which gas works took 7,939 tons, shipping 1,480 tons and trade 3;011 tons. No coal has been imported by the railways since July. The Minister's letter has been sent to all gas companiesj to mAyors of boroughs and city councils using Australian coal, and to importers.
