COMMISSIONERS REPLY TO PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT FEDERAL BANK UNGENEROUS
-By Telegraph — Copyright.)
SYDNEY, Tuesday. In an official statement issued by the president on behalf of the commissioners of the Government Savings Bank, in reply to Mr. J. H. Scullin, regret is expressed that the Prime Minister should see fit to make a statement of so uncompromising a character. The commissioners' statement points out that the present board has never given any consideration to any definite offer from the Commonwealth Bank and that the proposals put forward for amalgamation were of such an ungenerous nature that they were not acceptable to them. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, announced in the House of Representatives on October 16, that the Commonwealth Government was convinced that the only sound way to deal with the problem created by the closing of the State Savings Bank was to amalgamate it with the Commonwealth Savings Bank. The Government was prepared to co-operate to that end.
