INDIAN MASSES PROTEST AGAINST CONGRESS DEMANDS SEPARATE ELECTORATE
— By Telegraph — Copyright.)
Rec. Oct. 20, 7.50 p.m. CALCUTTA, Tuesday. Mass meetings are being held throughout India protesting in the strongest language against the National Congress' demands, which, it is claimed, will cheat the "untouchables" out of what they claim to be their rights to a separate electorate, under the Federal constitution to be framed in London. A meeting at Madras, at which Mahatma Gandhi was described as "the greatest enemy of the 'untouchables'" is typical of the community's temper. Prior to the meeting Union Jaeks and portraits of the King were carried in processions through the streets, crowds shouting their loyalty to the British Raj. The "untouchables" number nearly 80,000,000, or nearly a quarter of India's population.
