BUTTER MARKETS

-By Telegraph-

TREMENDOU S FIELD WILL OPEN UP AT LOWER PRICE LEVEL SYDNEY MERCHANT'S VIEWS

(Press Assn.-

-Copyright.)

AUCKLAND, Monday. Butter marketing prospects were discussed by Mr A. W. Wilson, chairman of directors of Empire Dairies Ltd., on his arrival from Sydney to-day. He said -m.arkets are becoming more difiicult to secure but there remains a wide scope. It might he that the farmer will have to be content with a lower price. As soon as butter gets into the position of displacing margarine a tremendous field will be opened up. New Zealand had done excellent work in Great Britain in putting up butter in pound pats, said Mr Wilson. This should he extended. The more people who could be induced to buy genuine butter in pats the better it would be for New Zealand and Australia. He admitted that the future would see great competition between butter and margarine. He remarked on the importance of legislation to prevent the blending of any fo^eign with any Empire butter, and the requirement of distinct labelling. Another good prospect was the British preferential tariff. In Australia a preparation consisting of 15 or 20 per cent of butterfat and the balance of cocoanut oil was being sold and formed a distinct danger to the dairy farmers' interests, but, legislation had been promised to prohibit such a blending.
