CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The first round of the Open Golf Championship, decided in four medal roitnds, was played at Shirley links to-day. The eourse was in excellent order, though rather hard and dry. The weather was of mid-summer warmth, and windless, making the links well night perfect for low scoring. The best scores were: — A. J. Shaw, first round, 67 ; second round, 73; total, 140. E. M. McFarlane, first round, 73; second round, 71; total, 144; C. C. Clements, 74, 72, 146; H. R. Blair, 71, 76, 147; J. H.
