ROTORUA DEFEATED

KIWI LADIES' TEAM WIN HOCKEY MATCH. EXCITING SECOND SPELL. Playing at the Government grounds last Saturday afternoon, the Kiwi (Auckland) ladies' hockey team def eated the Rotorua "B" team by three goals to two, the visiting team having a slight territorial advantage throughout the game. Kiwis went to the attack from the bully-off and made strong advances into the Rotorua twenty-five, good work by B. Fisk and A. Hato keeping them out and the ball eventually going out at half-way. Rotorua took a hand in attack, but P. Ehau was penalised for offside and the visitors regained the lost ground with the free hit. Subsequent play was mostly in favour of the Kiwi team, the Rotorua halves on many occasions being caught badly out of position. Kiwi were the first to score, a good passing rush by their forward line.seeing M. Francis net with a good shot. Rotorua livened up their play to some extent and Q. Ward in goal for Kiwi was called upon to save, which she did in good style. A further attack by Rotorua was spoilt, R. Steele being offside. The first spell ended with the visitors on attack. n Improved play on both sides made the game more interesting in the second half. The Kiwi team again went to the attack in the early stages, but were repeatedly stopped by J. Chaytor, B. Fisk aiid A. Hato. A local forward rush saw R. Steele and R. Ratema doing good work, but M. Fryer-Raisher and B. Isaacs were safe. A sudden attack by Kiwi transferred play into the Rotorua circle and M. Waters scored. Kiwi were now leading by two goals to nil. After this reverse the Rotorua forwards attacked and R. Steele, receiving, after scrambly play in the Kiwi circle, scored. Rotorua eame back again and had a further shot, but Q. Ward saved and conceded a penalty corner, S. Needham clearing. Even play followed, Rotorua eventually getting away again, S. Naere scoring with a good shot. From the bully, M. Francis secured and took the ball down to the Rotorua line and, shooting from an acute angle hit the post, from which the ball glanced into the net. With a few minutes to go the game was quite exeiting but Rotorua could not even up the score and the match ended in favour of ^he visitors, the final scores being Kiwi 3, Rotorua 2. ! Miss Clarke (Auckland) and Mr. Casey (Rotorua) controlled the game.
