OLD PALS

WRETCHED EXISTENCE OF OLD HORSES OF MOUNTEDS. ; * ■"** PLIGHT IN EGYPT. LONDON, Saturday. Many Australian Lighthorsemen shot their mounts to pi-event them from falling into the hands of Gyppos, but others left them to exist among the hundreds sold in Egypt by the British. Mrs. Brooke, wife of Colonel Geoffrey Brookes', of the 16/5 Lancers, in a letter to "The Times" as secretary of the Old War Horse Fund, states that arra'ngements have been made to purchase and humanely destroy all old war horses traceable in Egypt. Many thousands have died and others are so old that they have become the property of the poorest natives, who work them at night timo in order to avoid trouble with the police. The committee, before destroying the horses, gives them gpod food and a few hours' peace, and farewell them in English. Mrs. Brooke is diffident in appealing to Australia, in view of the financial stringency, but informed a "Sun" representative that Australian horses i receive the same treatment as British. Australian contributions may be sent to her at 4 Rue Alexandre le Grand, Heliopolis, Egypt.
