UNEMPLOYMENT.
SURPRISED.
To the Editor. Sir, — In your paper of Saturday last I notice the grant for Unemployed is further reduced and am enclosing some figures taken from "Hansard" No. 6, pages 172-173. While single men were allowed to make 18s per week, members of the board were drawing £12 12s per week as fees, and this does not include the Commissioner's salary and expenses, nor salary of extra staff. The Commissioner already being head of Census and Statstics Office. Auckland, members four days' sitting fees, £22 13s 8d; train ,fares, £13 ls 4d; accommodation, £9; Total £44 15s; Christchurch members, fees, £22 13s 8d; train fares, 6s 8d; boat fares, £5 10s; accommodation, £8; Total, £36 10s 4d; Palmerston North members, fees, £11 6s lOd train fares, £1 7s 2d; accommodation, £4; Total, £16 14s. Wellington members, fees, £15 2s 4d; fares, nil; acommodation, nil; making an total for a week of 4 days £113 ls 8d. Is it any wonder funds are running short and enough to make people ask if the tax is collected to provide work for the unemployed or soft iobs for friends of the Government.* —
I am, etc.
