UNEMPLOYMENT TAX

("Post" Special Commissioner).

ADDITIONAL CHARGE ON WAGES AND SALARIES FAVOURED C ON SIDER ATION BY CABINET

WELLINGTON, Monday. It is understood that Cabinet has decided to increase taxation under the Unemployment Act in order to provide additional money for relief purposes. The matter has not yet been finalised, but an increase in the emergency unemployment charge on wages and salaries appears to be more favourably regarded than an increase in the levy, and it is said that at least an additional penny may be added to the tax. It is understood that, pending the organisation of land development works, unemployment relief will be given through a policy of road improvements. Reports are being furnished to Cabinet on the suitability of blocks of land in the Rotorua-Taupo area, aggregating 142,000 acres, but it is gathered that the information so far to hand indicates that a eomparatively small portion would be likely to yield satisfactory results.
