Sir John Monash, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., was born in Melbourne in June, 1865. He was the son of the late Louis Monash, of St. James Park, Melbourne. In 1891 he -married Victoria, youngest daughter of the late Mr Motion Moss, of Melbourne. Educated at Scots College and Melbourne University, he graduated in Arts, Engineering and Laws, and was Argus Scholar and took Honours in Engineering. He was appointed a member of the Melbourne University Council in 1912, and has held the position of ViceChancellor of that University since 1923. He commenced practice in 1884 as a Civil Engineer, and since 1900 has specialised in reinforced concrete construction of all kinds, having introduced this method into Victoria, Tasmania and SSouth Australia. Sir John Monash was Chief Censor for Australia at the outbreak of the war, until appointed a Brigade Commander in the Australian Imperial Forces. His name was mentioned in despatches three times in the Gallipolicampaign, and Monash Valley, at Anzac, is named after him. He subsequently served in the Suez Canal defence zone and in France, where he received promotion to the rank of Major-General, and commanded the Third Australian Division. In 1918 he was made Lieutenant- General and given command of the Australian Army Corps in France. He received many decorations, including the French Legion of Honour, the Belgian Croix de Guerre, and the American Distinguished Service Medal.. Among his publications were "Australian Victories In France" and numerous scientifie papers on engineering subjects.
