LORD BLEDISLOE SURRENDERS : ONE-FIFTH OF OFFICIAL ALLOWANCES LEAD IN SELF-SACRIFICE

— By Telegraph — Copy right).

WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, has received the followipg ' letteil from the Gov.ernorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe. "In view of the present serious financial position of this Dominion, a position more eritical than was anticipated six months ago, I have decided to waive another portion of the salary and allowance granted me as Governor-General by the Government, making the total sum so relinquished £1500 a year, or one-fifth of the whole emolument of my office, such waiver to take effect as from November 1, and to continue so long as the financial crisis justifies, and to be purely personal to myself, and not in any way applicable to my successor. "I feel that I canilot confidently appeal to others to display the full measure of self-sacrifice according to their means during tbe present emergency unless I do the same myself, and though this reduction in my official emolument will necessarily involve some further appreciable inroad upon such private resources as her Excellency and I possess, I am able, nevertheless, to contemplate that witbout anxiety. By the continued exercise of rigid economy, the traditional requirements of my office can be maintained at an adequate standard." In handing the letter to the Press for publication, the Prime- Minister desired to express the gratitude of himself and his colleagues for the very practical and generous action of his Excellency in this time of serious economic stress. "I feel certain," said Mr. Forbes, "that the lead given by the GovernorGeneral will be very warmly appreciated throug'hout the Dominion."
