NEW DUTIES
ONLY TOBACCO AND PETROL TO BE FURTHER TAXED CUSTOMS RESOLUTIONS WELLINGTON, last night. Petrol and tobacco are the only items which will bear increased customs duties under the tariff resolution adopted by the House of Representatives to— night. Under the resolution which becomes cffective from October 7, the import and excise duties on cut and plug tobacco will be increased by a further 8d per pound and motor spirit by 2d. per gallon. There was a long discussion on the profits of petrol companies and in spite of the Prime Minister's assurance that, according to the report which was being prepared, no undue profits were being made, members on all sides of the House expressed the hope that there would be a full investigation into the position before the legislation embodying tariff resolutions was placed before the House. Several members contenjded v.that the companies could well alford to carry the increased duty themselves.
