BELIZE DISASTER
PEOPLE DESPAIR MAGNITUDE OF THEIR LOSSES APPALS POPULATION OF COLONY THOUSANDS DESTITUTE (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, Saturday. Telegraphing from Belize British Honduras, the oflficer administering the Government of the colony, says that dull despair has settled upon the populace, who are appalled by the magnitude of the disaster which has befallen them. The arrival of motor lorries has expedited the clearing up of the town. Temporary shelters are arising from the ruins, but over 2370 families are now dependent on the Government for supplies of food and clothing. Heavy losses of property and material caused by the hurricane, coupled with the depressed state of the markets, appears likely to • have most serious effects upon the colony. Already 622 deaths have been registered and a revised estimate of the total deaths places them at between 800 and 1000.
