TOLL OF THE MOTOR

In a statement commenting upon the very serious position shown by the Transport Department's report upon motor fatalities last year the. officers of the Wellington Automobile Club draw attention to several important aspects of the probiem of reducing the accident toll, says the "Evening Post." Care, caution, and commonsense are the three first factors necessary to prevent unnecessary loss of life and suffering. It is remarked that the 221 accidents last year, giving rise to 247 deaths, were but a small proportion of the whole field of accidents, and a very serious position is thus revealed. The fatal accidents represented last year an increase of 30 per cent. on the previous year's figure, and the deaths an increase of 33 per cent. The loss to the Dominion in earning power through the loss of 247 lives was practically equivalent to £1,000,000 per annum, a staggering figure.
