TAXI PHONES
TWO FACTIONS ON ] AWARA ST. STAND For some time past the Rotorua I Borough Council has been receiving j complaints wijh regard to the use of I the_ telephone on the Arawa Street I taxi stand. There are apparently j two sections among the drivers on 1 the stand and disputes have arisen i between them as to the stand arrangements. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, been dealing with the matter and reported to Wednesday's meeting of i the Borough. Council that he had submitted a definite proposal to the drivers; this proposal embraced. the - erection of a further taxi-phone . on I the stand outside the box, and this would he hoped, solve the difficulty. i "It is quite evident to me that ; there is a certain amount of bitter- j ness among both sections, and no i doubt each side has legitimate ground for complaint," remarked his j Worship. "I think we will have to do something otherwise we are going to have blows struck there," said' Cr. O. H. I Coleman, who expressed the opin- ' ion that the company operating on i this stand should have a separate stand divorced entirely from the general taxi phone used by the own- I er drivers. ;
Cr. Johnston thought that if there was a chance of settling the matter i amicably, it should be left to the 1 General Committee, to report back to the council at its next meeting. Cr. Wackrow expressed the opinion that a certain amount of feeling I had crept into the position, and he I thought the only solution was to keep j the two factions apart. It was finally decided to refer the matter baclc to the General Com- i mittee, after the Mayor had .explained that his purpose was to provide a second phone which could be used ! by the company's cars.
