TOURIST DEPT'S. ATTITUDE TOWARD PROPOSED REDUCTIONS COUNCIL DISCUSSION At last night's meeting of the Rotorua Borough Couneil, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., forwarded a letter received by him from the Minister for Tourist and Health Resorts, advising that the matter of reducing electrie light charges in Rotorua was receiving attention. The Department pointed out, however, that the present financial conditions were not favourable to suggestions which involved a reduction in Government revenue. Not Pasaing It On Cr. O. H. Coleman said he took it that. all employees of the Department
I had had a 10 per eent. cut. The. Gov- ! ernment had asked all employers to compensate for the cut by passing on reductions in the cost of living. Surely under these curcumstances, the Department should pass a reduction on to the eonsumers. The reply did not appear to him to be in keeping with the Government's own professions, and he moved that the council protest against the reply. Cr. W. Galbraith seconded the motion. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, said that he knew the Department itself was very sympathetic towards the reductions, but he understood that it was having diffieulty in convincing the Treasury. Personally he thought it would be better to leave the matter open and not forward a resolution of protest. It was finally decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor and Cr, Coleman to formulate a reply to be forwarded to the Minister of Tourist and Health Resorts.
