MR. COATES SAYS ELECTION-. POSTPONEMENT NOT * DISCUSSED £ UNEMPLOYMENT POSITION J
WELLINGTON,, Tuesday. The impression conveyed froin general lobby gossip that the new Forbes-Coates' Cabinet is co-operab-ing harmoniously in the work o|i preparing a joint plan or policy was confirmed in a brief interview to-day with Mr. Coates who has assumej heavy Ministerial responsibilities £js a partner of the Prime Minister ip the new arrangement. ^ Working As Team "Yes, it is quite correct that the new Cabinet is working as a team,g Mr. Coates remarked. "It is an equ^| partnership with heavy responsibilfties as everyone must realise. ^ In thjfi spirit we are tackling the situatioj| and team work is necessary. So'mg of our final conclusions to be submi1| ted in due course to the House vsdlg no doubt, call for saerifices, but J| believe that all those who have Yergard for the high standing of New Zealand whether they are inside" Pafliament or out of -jt, will display the
same spirit of team work which Ca%^ inet has so quickly developed." ^ Carrying on Committee's Work fk When it was suggested to Mfe Coates that Cabinet was really cafcrying to- a conclusion the int err upt e£j work of the inter-party economic coibg mittee, he replied that it could bj§ put that way. A point was reached before the committee when it wag realised by a large section of thd
delegates that only by means of a policy commanding the support of g, substantial majority of t^ Housls could the Legislature evolve measureg which would be of practical value m a serious emergency. y Led to Coalition w This led to the f ormation of a CoaU ition Ministry so that the necessary programme could be prepared on & sound basis of equal responsibility all points, including that of administration. * . ' ' This last reference to administra| tlon prompted the question so fre® quently put to Minister as to whe-" ther the postponement of the gen£ eral election is involved. 'f "That matter has not been discussg ed," said Mr. Coates. "Much ofi course depends on the nature of the programme of economic rehabilita-* tion which Cabinet is now spending long hours considering. I have aU ready stated that in my opinion w$ must meet such matters when they arise, but no concentrated consideig ation has so f ar been. given to that question." | Unemployment .J
In conclusion Mr. Coates gave aif assurance that the urgent problefij. of unemployment is being actively dealt with. The arrangement o|. portfolios in the new Cabinet would^ he believed, result in a more completg co-operation of effort among thig various State Departments whiejl could assist in the alleviation of th|j position in co-operation with the UnJ employment Board of which he || chairman. % PERSONAL.
