EARL'S DEATH

(Press Assn. —

SUCCESSOR ON CARAVAN TRIP WHEN NEWS ARRIVES GIFT OF ESTATE SAVES DUTY

By Telegraph — Copyright).

LONDON, Monday. The late Earl of Oxford's cousin, Mr. Robert Walpole, who succeeds to the Orford baronies, was travelling In a caravan with his mother and sister when the news of the earl's death reached England. The new Lord Orford is 18 years of age. Prior to going to New Zealand, the Earl of Orford handed over some of his estates to Mr. Walpole, who came into possession of 9,000 acres of land. It was then estimated that if the Earl of Orford lived another three years the Treasury would lose enormous death duties through his gift to his cousin. The Earl's life exceeded that period by a few weeks. The housekeeper at Wolterton Hall was informed by telephone of the Earl's death and said she was sure that Mr. Walpole had not yet been advised, but he was reaching home by caravan on Monday. Lord Orford's father and brother were killed in the great war. The Earl of Orford's daughter, Lady Dorothy Mills, the authoress, intended going to New Zealand in October to visit her father.
