slump in sterling causes confusion in europe FRENCH FEAR BRITISH TARIFF
— By Telegraph — Copyright) .
LONDON, Saturday. The world-wide confusion of nerves following Britain's abandonment of the gold standard has eloquently demonstrated how sterling is the key of the world's business. The German Steel Trust is closing Wissen Mills, which employ 1000 hands, and 90 per cent. of whose output was scjld to foreigners on a sterling basis. The Chambers of Commerce throughout France are inundating the French Cabinet with pleas of intercession to prevent a British tariff. The Roubaix and Tourcoing textile traders are very perturbed at the sterling slump, which has automatically placed an impost of 33 per cent. on their output. It is pointed out that hitherto woollen yams and fabrics have formed one sixth of French exports to Britain.
