BEAUTY SECRETS

NORMA SHEARER LIFTS VEIL OF STUDIO PRA'CTICES. Beauty parlour secrets are mysteries no longer, writes Norma Shearer. The little triclcs of enhancing one's beauty may be indulged in the privacy of the boudoir, but the world at large is aware of the methods, for suggestions are forthcoming from beauty hints in magazines, from radio talks, and from confidenees exchanged by girls themselves. Those who have watched Leila Hyams making up for a role in a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture may have heen a bit surprised at her using a fine-tooth comb in her eyebrpws, but the result of their arched perfection gives them the idea of trying the same trick. Miss Hyams finds that by combing the eyebrows upward she can more easily pluck out the hairs that grow out of line, and then by combing them down she is able to keep the upper line plucked in the same manner. Then, after this procedure, they are combed away from the bridge of the nose, resulting in a neat, well-groomed appearance. Joan Crawfor d has a way of brushing her hair that would make. the girl with the marcel wave shake her head in belief that every bit of wave would be brushed out by this vigorous method. But after this severe brushing, Joan's hair is smoothed in place — with the curl retained — and even heightened as a result. Natural oils are brought out by the brushing, giving each ridge of the wave a softer, more natural aspect. Now that hats are being worn back from the f ace the girls are going in for smoother and more classical foreheads. When the girls wore fringes, they could lift their eyebrows in surprised, arched effect, knowing the forehead wrinkles would be hiddpn. This is impossible with the hair worn away from the face, for not only the forehead is exposed, but the eyes are brought into prominence as

well. Norma Shaarer was one of the first stars in Hollywood to adopt a hairdressing that would give the face an 'open" expression rather than have the face closed in by heavy curtains of hair. If the girls who puzzle how to dress their hair would study there would be more individual types. ,When Greta Garbo first invented the semi-long boh, for which she is famous, the rest of the feminine world was appearing in short, cropped styles. Now the majority of girls are more type conscious, with the result that one sees shingled hair styles worn by those of boyish personalities and fluffy, curly, disarranged hair worn hy the fluffy types. The sleek, sophisticated hair dresses are also being worn by the well-groomed women.
