W.E.A. To-NIght "The House with the Twenty Windows," is the play selected for reading at to-inght's meeting of the Rotorua W.E.A. Mary Parkington is the autbor, and if there is any thing in a name, her play should be well worth going to hear. The meeting, which will be held in the Citizens' Club, will commence at 7.30 p.m. 1 Golf Programme Changed. i The postponement of the Rotorua j Golf Club's Eclectic Handicap on acj count of bad weather on Saturdby, September 5 has disorganised the dub's week-end programme. A flag niatch was to have been played !on Saturday but this has now been abandoned in favour of the Canadian foursome3 omitted last week. Thbse intending to participate are reminded that they must choose their own partners and opponents. 1
Unusual Hail Storm A party of Rotorua motorists who were travelling to Hamilton on Wednesday, had their attention attracted by an unusual hail storm which eomi menced near the end of the deviation at the Okoroire turn off and travel,led in a band about 200 yards wide right across the countryside. The fall oceurred at a little after 1 p.m. and ^was so heavy that hail lay tb a considerable depth on the ground. When the party returned late in th® evening the hail still covered the ground. Removal of Hospital Buildmg The work of removing disused wards and hutments at Eing George V. Hospital is progressing rapidly. The old massage and bath building on the Kuirau side of Pukeroa Hill has been practically demolished, dnly tnree thin partition walls remaining. The storehouse has been taken down in sections and one portion is on a trolly ready for removal. The workmen are now concentrating on the Suvla and Anzac rotunda wards. These two are being removed in sections for transport to Otaki, where they will be re-erected as part of the health camp shortly to be constructed there.
Low Lake Level One of the results of the fall which has taken place in the level of Lake Rotorua is to be seen at Hamurana jetty, where a pronounced sand bank has made its appearance right underneath the piling. Although this jetty m the past has been used by the larger fishing launches, this year the level of- the lake has fallen so appreelably that it is doubtful whether launches will be able to use the wharf at all during the coming fishing season.
Owtier Claims Car The Ford car which recently was found abandoned near Whaka and was brought into the borough yard by the traffic authorities has now been claimed by its owner and will shortly be removed.
Rationing Work For the week ending to-morrow, a total of 322 men have been engag'ed m work under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme within the Rotorua Borough. Owing to the reductions in the amount of the district allocations, however, as forecasted in the "Post's" previous outline of the situation, it : has been found necessary to make . ai'i-angements for rationing the work ; which will be available during the next two or three weeks. N.Z. A let- I ter, setting out the aims and objects j oi the Association has been received ' by the Town Clerk, Mr. W. A. Me- ! Lean, with a request that it be handed to some person who would be interested in forming a branch of the Association in Rotoi-ua. Fire Brigade Defeated A snooker match was played on Wednesday evening at the fire station between teams eomposed of members of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows Lodge and the Rotorua Fire Brigade. The match resulted in a win for the Lodge by a margin of 151 points. Following are the results, ^ Lodge members being mentioned first -Armer 44, tied with Briggs, 44* ' Hill 61, beat Balsdon 12; Doherty 48 1 beat Tucker 40; Duff 68, beat Mun- ^ ro 27; Morgan 60, beat Middleton ' 23; Lewis 52, beat Shiels 36.
