WASHINGTON, Tuesday. In addition to the United States Steel Corporation, the Bethlehem Stecl and the Youngstown Sheet Tube Companies have announced equal salary and wage reductions to start from October 1, while General Motorr, Corporation has stated that all sala: ied employees will receive cuts of from 10 per cent. to 20 per cent., with the possibility of later wage reductions. The United States Rubber Company has instituted a five day working week, with a nine per cent. wage cut. The United States and Bethelhem Steel reductions affect a total of 28,000 persons. The President, Mr. Herbert Hoover, and his associates are alleged to be bighly disappointed at the reductions and it is reported that the admin'stration will continue its opposition to them. The Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Klei.i, reaffirmed his recent assertion: "There will be hell to pay throughout the United States if wages generally are reduced."
