DIRT TRACK RACING

ROTORUA SOON TO HAVE SPEEDWAY OF ITS OWN s— — FIRST MEETING, LABOUR DAY Rotorua is shortly to have its introduction to the thrills of moiorcycle dirt-track ■ racing. A private company has been organised to be kliown as Rotorua Speedways and has already practically completed an excellent racing track. Over the weekend a party of well-known Auckland | riders, among others, Ben Bray, who has just returned from riding in England and on the Isle of Man, Dug Matson, and Wilbert Coyle, all inspected the track and stated that it would pass the most rigorous tests of the riding fraternity. The track is situated ■ on Tenai Road opposite the Abattoir site and is admirably adapted for the purpose

oi a speedway. It has been laid down in pumice instead of the usual cinders and is, of course, in accordance with the requiremehts of the A.C.U. It has been inspected^ by Mr Jack Kaye, the well-known' manager of Auckland Speedways, who is so impressed with the possibilities that he has offered to be present at the first track meeting and give the ofiicials the invaluable benefit of his experience. This first meeting is to be held on Labour Day, and arrangements are already well forward for a first class programme in which pominent Auckland and visiting riders will participate. Another racing enthusiast who has inspected the track and is very favourably impressed, is Mr W. Matson, father of New Zpaland's champion rider, Alf Matson. Mr Matson states that from the reperts which his son has given him of tracks overseas, the Rotorua speedway will stand among the first rank. Speedway racing has proved tremendously popular in all the main centres and if the complete arrangements which are being made by the promoters of the Rotorua scheme may be taken as any indication, this centre will be the next to experience the boom.
