LADIES' HOCKEY HAPPENINGS

"Steks."

(By

Ladies' hockey matches played on the Government Glounds last Satur- | t day proved very uninteresting for the | j reason that all t.eams took the fieild j | short of the required number of play- ' j ers. This unfortunately is the usual j trouble experienced after the return i of tiie representative team from the j | Dominion tournament, and is very i S disheartening to controllers of the ' »' game and spectators alike. i Playing Mamaku, Taniwha main- J tained unheaten record by three goals j to two in a drab game. ■ j The next game, between Whippets i and Arawa, was won by the former I team by four goals again st two. j R. Ratema scored two goals for Taniwha and M. Ratema the other j goal for the same team. Mrs. Prattle j netted twice for the losers. Whippets' total wa;s divided be- i tween B. Fiske, M. Black and G. Dod- j son, who was credited with two goals. j R. Kingi secured Arawa's total. Putaruru ai e agam unable to fulfil their engagement and defaulted to Ngongotaha. Taniwha are the winners for the i season of the Wairua-a-Rangi Cup, j and must be congratulated upon going j through their ten matches without j loss. | The points secured by team 3 in this j competition are as follows: — Taniwha, ! 20; Arawa, 11;; Whippets, 10; Mama- j ku, 10; Putaruru, 6; Ngongotaha, 3. i i Trophies won during the season j will prbobaly be presented at a fune- [ tion to be arranged later. j Tournament Too Sternuous. Those who followed the conte:ts in ! the New Zealand women's hockey championship tournment at Remuera i were agreed that some dhange shohld j : be made in the future to relieve the i ; strain on the g'irls who take part.Few ! , tournaments have been more strenu- j ; ous than that held in Auckland, main- : ly because the ground at Remuera i

was unusuany iasr m rne eariy part oi the section play. Mr. R. L. Thompson, president of the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association, stated last week that it was clear there must be a brealc in next year's tournament, to give all the girls a full day's rest about Tuesday or Wednesday, reports the Auckland Star. At the end of the section play this year the competitorg appeared "played out," and the standard of hockey had suffered. It was impossible for the players to keep up the pace they set in the first two or three games. Mr. G. C. Hamilton, manager for Eastern Southland, the winnerg of the championship, said he thought the solution would be to revert to the old system of having a break after the' first three days. Playing in the Wellington Ladies' Maori team against the Wairarapa Maoris, the play of T. Mitchell (exArawa) was described as outstanding. Three requests have been receb'ed by the local association from teams desirous of playing. matches in Rotorua before the close of the season. It is hoped to accept all three, Hamilton having been offered September 26, Kerepehi October 3, and the Kiwi Club (Auckland), October 10 as suitable dates for matches.
