-Convright.
By Telephone—
NEW YORK, Wednesday. Two extraordinary shootings in differ.ent parts of the country occurred yesterday and to-day, in each case involving the death of the chief of police. At Bernardsville (New Jersey) the Chief of Police, Mr Charles Cavanagh, was brought out of his house by a fire in a neighbour's home and shot from ambush. He had been actively warring against slygrog -shops and bootleggers and the act is believed to have been dictated by a desire for revenge. At Hartford (Alabama), the Chief of Police, Mr Roady and a former Mayor, Mr J. Radford, shot each other to death in front of the latter's home in a quarrel over the use 'of a road-malcing machine.
