I TOURNAMENT NOTES.
(By '
Following upon their earlier , success in the Dominion Hockdy Championship at Auckland last week, the Rotorua representative team met Poverty Bay in their third niatch and finished the game still undefeated, although forced to a draw, each side being credited with one gpal. The: play of the Rotorua team showed further improvement in this match, the halves being rearranged by, playing O. Benton as centre half and Tapu Mitchell in the fight half positiort. Tfie experiitteht worked very well and both players did all that was expected of them. . : The forwards performed in a capable manner and were ahvays dangerous, but although on occasion she put aeross some fine centres, M. Mitchell (left wing) allowed too many passes from her backs to hurdle her stick and cross the side line. A G. Rogers played her^ usual solid game as inside left and tlie quickness with which she sized the position when scoring her goal proved what a reliable and heady forward she is. The scoop stroke, which she used, was the o&ly possible shot which could be employed in the particular circumstances. The other forwards, M. Black, R. Ratema and M. Ratema .all did their share and the jpassing of the whole line was much improved. It was a treat to watch the play of E. Mitchell, captain and right fullback. The manner in which she broke up numerous Poverty Bay attacks was nothing less than brilliant. In this task she was well supported by L. Tanner in the right fullback position. J. Tanhet (goalkeeper) made a couple of good saves -and actually : stopped the shot which gave Poverty ' Bay their score, the ball, unfortunately, trickling over the line before she . could reeover herself . Match with Auckland. The fourth match, against Auckland City, s credited Rotorua with a further win, the advahtage being in their favour by two goals to one. The same team was fielded as in the previous match and eontinued to :show improvement. The play of the left wing was much iihproved and most of the attacking movements were carried down this side of the field. The first score, however, resulted from a good pass fi-om the right wing (M. Ratema), P. Rogers receiving and hetting with a good shot. The winning goal was obtained hy M. Black, who intercepted the rebound off the Auckland goalkeeper after a shot by M. Ratema. Intense interest and excitement prevailed during the Rotorua versus Wellington contest, stirring tustles being witnessed in the circles of both teattis.
