PULLS AND SLICES

GOLF NOTES

(By

Heavy rain during last week-end caused the abandonment of the Rotorua Golf Club's eclectic handicap, hut this match, with the same times and partners., will be contested next Saturday. The Arikikapakapa cour'se during Saturday and Sunday was in 'an unplayable condition. Pools of water were lying everywhere and the newiy prepared gTOund was but a mass of mud. Since.the cessation of the rain the course has again dried off and is back to its usual fine playing condition... Golfers are hopiiig that the weather will hold for the c'oming Saturday, for. a week's golf missed " is an irreparable loss to the ke'en golfer. An unpleasant surprise awaited a competitior in a stroke competition at Berhampore course' recently. It was over 36 holes. The competitor turned in an 80 in the morning. He had to be at work at 4.45 p.m.,'and on the completion of the first round suggested to his marker that they go on and finish the 36 holes. Being a sport," he agreed, and the two, passing the clubhouse without lunch, Went on and finished. Our friend did a 76, hut when they handed in their cards they were told he was disqualified, as he had not handed in the first round card as soon as possible. The r.ule is definite: "On completion of the stipulated round the card shall be signed b,y the person who has marked it, and the competitor shall see that it is handed in as soon as reasonably possible. The penalty for a breach of this rule is disqualification." Sloan Morpeth seems to be still off his game, in the slough of a period of loss of confidence or style. From it he may emerge a better player, for there was much in his style that suited him while his eye was in and he was timing correctly, which would, on his off* days, lead him into serious troubles. Young Ferrier seems to have struck a very solid period of good form, on the othbr hand. Morpeth would have little on him in the matter of length, and as Ferrier made no mistakes, the result was a foregone conclusion after the morning round. Needless to say, Morpeth's game was nothing- lilce that which lie played at i Belmont.-
