ECONOMY INQUIRY
views of labour union leaders FURTHER EVIDENCE WELLINGTON, Monday. The Parliamentary economic committee heard evidence this morning from Mr James Roberts, secretary of the Allianee of Labour, who was accompanied by a number of trades union officials. This afternoon Mr William Foodfellow, Managing Director of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company Ltd. was , heard and to-rnorrow will be devoted to further evidence from departmental heads. The witnesses for the labour unions are understood to have argued strongly that wage reductions would only accentuate the difficulties and to have dealt at length with the effect of the displacement of manpower by machinery. It is believed that the shortening of hours was advanced as one of the possible solutions of the problem of absorbing surplus labour. According to lohby gossip, Mr Goodfellow spoke in favour of a one per cent. reduction of the bank overdraft and deposit rates, but opposed any 1 interf erence with ordinary interest rates. He is also stated to have advocated a further wage reduction.
