PULLS AND SLICES

GOLF NOTES

(By

With the Veterans' Tournament following closely the Rotorua Golf Club's Open Amateur Championshipj there has been little opportunity for club matches. The mixed bogey handicap played by club members during last week-end proved most popular and a good muster turned out for the competition. Rotorua entrants for the amateur open ehampionships were conspicuous by their absence as early as the conclusion of the third round. C. Kusabs was the only local player to malce any standing in either. first or second division. All the others were out by the end of the second round. In the handicap tournament, eontested by the veterans who missed getting into the cup match, C. Worthington is the only Rotorua golfer to remain. On his present form he stands an excellent chance 'of taking this competition. Against him are H. Horton, J. M. Somerville and E. Hutchison, all playing consistent games. Whether the final of the Veterans' Cup tournament should be played over 36 holes or only 18, as at present, was tbe main point of discussion at an informal meeting of^the veterans called at the conclusion of play yesterday. On a vote being taken, however, the contestants were in favour of only 18 holes being played as they considered *36 might be a little too gruelling for some of the older men. The veterans at the meeting yesterday expressed themselves as entirely pleased with the tournament, and stated that they would sooner play on the Arikikapalcapa eourse than anywhere else in New Zealand. They also inferred that there would be a larger entry next year than this, despite the fact that this year was a record. The best combined nett score in the elimination round for tbe Veterans' Cup tournament, was registered by F. W. Wilkie, Dr. Macknight, C. Redhead and F. Mingay, each witb 148. As the handicaps of these players were only 12, 10, 11, 11 respectively, they are considered very creditable performances. The Arikikapakapa eourse has received great benefit from the recent warm weather and light showers. The grass is coming away well, and the eourse has a fresh appearance? reminding us that the golfing season will soon be on the wane. The new grass tees are standing up well to the heavy wear of the tournaments, and are a decided improvement on the old earth patches. A putting competition, on the green in front of the elub-house, being held during the three days of the tournament, is causing much interest and amusement, amongst both members and visitors. Several aspirants for the prize are not satisfied with only one round, but have entered a number of cards, while others have been spending the past two days in practice in the hope of a good score before the competition closes.
