CONFERENCE OF GRQWERS CONGRATULATED BY GOVERNOR

— Cotrvriirhf:.

■ WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The annual conference of the New Zealand Fruit Growers' Federation was opened by the Governo'r-General, Lord Bledisloe to-day. Mr T. C. Brash, in his presidential address, stated that the fruit-growing industry was one of growing importr.nce, and the fruit-grower had probably suffered less in proportion than any other class of exporting primary producers. With regard to the importation of fruit boxes, he hoped that during the coming season it would not be necessary to import any cases as an ord'er for nearly 900,000 cases had beeaj,. placed with lacal box manufacturers!^ Various phasefe of fruit-growing were touched upon by the GovernorGeneral. He congratulated the New Zealand fruitgrowers on having found a new commercial outlet for their fruit on the Continent of Europe, and in having in such a thorough fashion organised their industry under the wise direction of the New Zealand Export Control Board, in so many different directions, with advantageous commercial results. Indeed, it might confidently be said that but for the well-informed efficieney of the "socalled" control, established about six years ago, last year's trading results might have been very different. He asked the growers to exercise care in the choice of varieties for over-sea trade.
