SUSSEX BATSMEN SCpRE WELL AGAINST DOMINION.

BIG FIRST INNINGS SCORE. BRIGHTON, Monday. The weather was fine this morning when play was resumed- Tate and Cornford made a fine stand, in spite of numerous bowling chaiiges, until Cornford was bowled in attempting to hit Merritt. The score at luncheon was 161 for two wickets. The Sussex batsmen took complete mastery of the New Zealand attackAfter passing his century Tate hit even more freely than before. He lost Bowley shortly after lunch, the bowler deflecting a catch to Talbot, at mid-on. Tate was out to a fine catch by James, having batted for 200 minutes, and included three sixes and 14 fours in his excellent display of clean, powerful hitting. He was dropped twice in the slips off Cromb before reaching 50. At this stage the score was 249 for four wickets. Duleepsinhji and Cook added 139 runs before the latter was brilliantly caught by James on the leg side. Duleepsinhji gave a. dazzling exhibition of batting artistry for tWo hours, and hit 10 fours. Another attractive innings by Langridge, compl.eted the day, and in the final over he obtained his thousand runs for the season, having got -his hundred wickets previously. Langridge batted for 115 minutes, and hit nine fours and one six. The New Zealand bowlers had a difficult task on a perfect wicket. Vivian and Merritt bowled steadily, and apart from the slips' catching the fielding was excellent. The attendance numbered 5000. Scores : — Sussex. — First InningsJ.
